Jackie Castilla
Class Level
Fall 2010 will begin my third (Junior) year here at CSU Stanislaus.
Degree Objective
I hope to take my education all the way and become a doctor of psychology.
Major/Department
I am a Psychology major with a criminal justice minor, but I am thinking about turning that into a double major and adding a Spanish minor. I like to keep things complicated.
Hometown
Murrieta, CA
Biography
I was born in Bellflower, Calif., and moved to Murrieta when I was a fourth-grader. My dad is a K9 officer and my mom works both as an accountant and an at-home mom. As a full blooded Cuban my first language was Spanish but I am fluent in both that and English. I have a younger sister who is 18 and a little brother who is 10. I have always been very involved in school and extra curricular activities and I take pride in enjoying life to its fullest.
Why did you choose CSU Stanislaus?
I was part of the AVID program at my high school and for spring break our junior year we took a four-day college trip across California and visited six different schools. CSU Stanislaus was one of the last schools we visited and although I really liked some of the other schools we visited, I knew that Stanislaus was the school for me as soon as we got here. It had a small atmosphere where I could concentrate on my education but still had a social life scene. It is also far enough from home to where I can grow and learn on my own, but close enough so I can go home when I’m feeling homesick.
What advice would you give a prospective student?
Have fun and enjoy every experience you’re put up against.
What has been your favorite academic or student life experience so far?
My favorite experience here at CSU Stanislaus would have to be working the Migrant Education summer camp in 2009. I have never experienced such a feeling as I did when I worked with those kids. I was there to help them, but they taught me more than they could ever realize.
What is your career objective?
I hope to become a criminal psychologist for the FBI after possibly spending a few years in the Air Force.
Do you plan to attend graduate school?
That is definitely in the plans for my future. Education is the gateway to success so I hope to take full advantage of the opportunities I am given.
What clubs, sports, and activities have you participated in?
I am a very social person and I like to constantly be involved in my education and surroundings. I was on the track team my first two years, I work in Early Outreach as a University Ambassador, and I stay very involved as a volunteer in our Warrior Activity Center. I was also recently hired as the Warrior Squad coordinator for this coming academic year.
Who is your most influential personal and/or University mentor?
I have met a great deal of influential people here at Stanislaus, but I would definitely choose Cesar Rumayor (Associated Students, Inc. Programs Assistant Director) as being the person who has influenced my outlook and college experience in the greatest degree.
