Biography

My name is Chad Cummings, and I have lived in Modesto, CA, my whole life. I graduated from Modesto High School in the spring of 2007. In fall of 2007, I began attending Modesto Junior College.  After completing my General Education requirements at MJC, I transferred to California State University, Stanislaus. I have now completed my first semester at CSU Stanislaus.  I will graduate with a B.A. in Economics and a Minor in Mathematics.

Why did you choose CSU Stanislaus?

I chose CSU Stanislaus because of its location and reasonable price.  Many friends and acquaintances of mine have attended the University and speak highly of it.  The University holds a positive reputation in this region of the Central Valley, and I do not regret my decision to attend.

What advice would you give a prospective student?

Develop good relationships with your professors. One of the great advantages of attending CSU Stanislaus is the low student-to-faculty ratio. Take advantage of it! Your professors have office hours for a reason, and visiting professors’ office hours is an effective way to improve your grades. Also, be aware of deadlines and requirements. If you can keep track of all your assignments and due dates, you will have very little school-related stress.

What has been your favorite academic or student life experience so far?

I’ve really enjoyed meeting people and making new friends in my classes.

What is your career objective?

Currently, I do not have any particular career in mind. For the time being, I am open to many options. I would like to refine my interests in Economics before I pursue a more definite career path.

Do you plan to attend graduate school?

It is likely that I will attend graduate school. There are several fields in economics that I am interested in studying, one of them being econometrics, which is a more math-intensive field. There are graduate programs that address this field of interest.

What clubs, sports, and activities have you participated in?

This past semester I was an active member of the Economic Association, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), and the Mathematics Club. I enjoyed being a part these organizations because it gave me a chance to interact with professors and peers in a casual environment outside the classroom.

Who is your most influential personal and/or University mentor?

The faculty in the Economics Department has greatly influenced me. Each professor has a unique teaching method and area of expertise. The department is successful in providing a wide range of classes that help undergraduate students develop a broad understanding of the domestic and international economy.
