Stephen Routh

Department

Politics and Public Administration

Biography

I grew up on the Monterey Peninsula, went to UC Santa Cruz and played on the tennis team there. I was a tennis teaching professional/tennis bum for several years, playing northern California tournaments and coaching on the courts until I was finally able to successfully manage a communication disorder I possess, upon which I was then able to return to academia and obtain my graduate degrees. My wife of 15 years is a public librarian and we live in up in Davis, California, with our two cats and too many books and too few tennis racquets.

What have you learned from your students?

Respect, approachability, and open-mindedness are just as important to the educational process as substantive knowledge.

Why do students choose CSU Stanislaus?

Best faculty on the planet, much less the Central Valley. Professors sincerely care about the performance of their students, and it shows. And remains affordable.

How do students succeed in your class?

Come to every class meeting and be engaged in the course's subject matter, take copious notes, listen closely to class discussions, and dazzle me with your newly obtained knowledge on exams and papers.

What brought you to CSU Stanislaus?

The collegiality and professionalism of my department's faculty brought me here, along with the ability to teach exactly the courses I want to teach; and the qualities of Stanislaus students have kept me here.

If you were not teaching, what other career do you see yourself in?

I honestly cannot see myself doing anything else instead of a teaching career, except maybe being an appointed US senator.

Describe a former student who has attained professional success.

Daniel Giraldi was one of the students in my first classes I taught at CSU Stanislaus several years ago and subsequently, after graduating, he successfully navigated law school and just passed the bar exam in the state of Illinois -- a bright and capable young man, and I am most proud of his achievements and how CSU Stanislaus helped get him to where he is today, a practicing attorney.
