Biography

Born in Shanghai to a family of intellectuals, Rose Zhang graduated from East China Normal University with a major in Physics. She worked as a researcher at Shanghai Institute of Science and Technology for three years before coming to the United States to pursue graduate studies. After completing a Master of Science degree at Mississippi State University specializing in non-linear optics, Rose arrived at UC Davis to pursue her doctoral degree under Prof. Robert Shelton, a world-renowned scholar in the field of solid-state physics and low-temperature superconductor. While completing her Ph.D. dissertation, Rose started her teaching career at CSU Sacramento. She was appointed Assistant Professor of Physics at CSU Stanislaus in 1994 and was promoted to an Associate Professor and Professor in 1997 and 2004, respectively, owing to her outstanding teaching and research accomplishment.

What have you learned from your students?

That we can learn from each other as we share experiences and information.

Why do students choose CSU Stanislaus?

CSU Stanislaus is a small university that offers more attention from instructors, in a small university town

How do students succeed in your class?

Learn the fundamental method in studying physics and physical science, and become familiar with techniques in understanding physics.

What brought you to CSU Stanislaus?

Beautiful environment, small town, low cost and high quality of living

If you were not teaching, what other career do you see yourself in?

- In industry where I can utilize my physics knowledge and training in R&D and technical marketing. I have worked three years at JDS Uniphase (telecom fiber-optic components company) in San Jose, CA during my sabbatical leave.
- At national labs or research university where I can focus more on academic research. I have collaborated with many scientists at national labs for my research in the past.
I choose teaching at CSU Stanislaus because I love teaching, and love to pass my knowledge to the young students.

Describe a former student who has attained professional success.

Dr. Nadia Navid, D.D.S. of Sonoma County, California has her family dentistry practice in Petaluma. She graduated from UC San Francisco in 2000, and was my favorite student in 1995. She did research under my supervision, and was president of Physics Club when I was the club advisor. Her information can be found at the following webpage http://www.petalumafamilydentist.com/dentist.htm.
