Biography
I'm 24 years old. I was born in Guadalajara Jalisco, Mexico. My family and I came to California when I was eight years old, and have been living here ever since. I'm a first-generation college student. I graduated from Hilmar High School in 2001 and received my A.A. Degree in Liberal Studies from Merced College in 2004. College life has been extremely challenging (and economically straining) because my parents never went to school and were not able to guide me or offer advice. I'm the fifth family member out of 11 siblings; four women and seven men. My parents have made many sacrifices for me to be here. I believe that graduating from an institution of higher education would be my way to say, "Thank you. Your sacrifices paid off." Additionally, I wanted to attend college because I want to live a better life than my parents. Growing up in Mexico was very hard. There were a lot of things I could not have. For this reason, I'm pursuing an education. Education is the only way to get a good job and live a good life. After the first day of working in the field sweeping almonds, I knew I did not want to work in the fields as my parents did. I want to get a master's degree in Public Administration, for it is a way to change the world.
Why did you choose CSU Stanislaus?
I initially started as a Liberal Studies major at CSU Stanislaus. People and teachers I used to work with told me CSU Stanislaus had one of the best Liberal Studies programs; that's why I enrolled. Later, after taking my first Sociology course, I changed my major to Sociology. I stayed at CSU Stanislaus because I love the campus and all the people who make it up.
What advice would you give a prospective student?
To pursue an education on any one subject they really enjoy. This will make your school experience more enjoyable and exciting. Therefore, you will always be motivated to come to school and be more likely to graduate.
Most memorable experience at CSU Stanislaus
One of the best experiences I've had at CSU Stanislaus was the trip to San Francisco for my American Theatre class; we went to the American Conservatory Theater and saw a play by Tennessee Williams -- "Cat On a Hot Tin Roof." Dr. John Mayer instilled in me a love for the theatre. Before this class, I had never attended a play before. Now, I attend plays on a regular basis and it is one of my favorite activities. Dr. Mayer is an excellent teacher. He was able to transmit his love for theatre because he teaches something he really enjoys.
What is your career objective?
Social worker, then public administrator
What clubs, sports, and activities have you participated in?
I am a member of the Sociology Club. My favorite activity is when we do "Christmas in a shoe box." Students at the University pick a child from a list of children and they buy a gift for that specific child and place it in a wrapped shoebox. The presents are then delivered to children at the Haven Women's Center in Modesto.
Who is your most influential personal and/or University mentor?
My Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) advisor Serah Martinez -- she has lovingly guided me during my time at CSU Stanislaus. She has really encouraged me to finish school and not to settle for a B.A. but to apply to a master's program. She believes in me, which really counts; especially since my family members are not the most encouraging people.
