Biography
My name is Iris Hernandez. I am originally from Mexico; my mother, brother, and I immigrated to the United States when I was 11 and resided in Los Angeles, CA. I dropped out of school when I was in the eighth grade and had my first child when I was 15. Soon after that I got married and then had my second son at the age of 18. When I turned 20, I divorced and realized that in order to obtain a better life for my children I needed to attain higher education. Although I had faced many challenges in my life, I managed to overcome them and move forward. From 2000 to 2005, I attended Los Angeles Valley College and completed an Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts. In 2008, I graduated from CSU Stanislaus with my B.A. in Sociology.
Why did you choose CSU Stanislaus?
I decided to attend CSU Stanislaus because I was tired of the big city life, and I wanted a better life for my sons. I wanted to live in a smaller community and, at the same time, attend a smaller university. CSU Stanislaus demonstrated not only to be a beautiful campus, but also to truly care about the students. The classes are small, and the professors give you personal attention.
What advice would you give a prospective student?
To never give up, and to know that even though sometimes it can be challenging, at the end it will pay off. No one can take away your education. Also, learn everything about the university since there are programs for the students. Additionally, introduce yourself to the professors and get to know them since they are there for you. Most importantly, to join programs such as the Faculty Mentor program, Student Affairs, clubs, etc., it is a great way to meet new and great people.
What has been your favorite academic or student life experience so far?
The personal attention given by the professors has been the best thus far. They like helping students and want us to succeed.
What is your career objective?
To obtain my Master’s in Public Administration so that I can initiate a mentoring program for former foster youth.
What clubs, sports, and activities have you participated in?
I have attended the Career Fair, Warrior Day, Cinco de Mayo celebrations, and other events. I also joined Student Support Services, Faculty Mentor Program, and Promise Scholars.
Who is your most influential personal and/or University mentor?
I am a former foster child so I was introduced to the advisor who initiated the Promise Scholars program, Wanda Bonell. She has been so inspirational and a mentor. She always believed in me and knows that I will complete my career.
