Biography
Prior to attending CSU Stanislaus, I attended Merced College, where I graduated with an Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice. I was raised in the small, rural community of Los Banos where my family currently resides. Being a first-generation and Latino student, I personally had to overcome many obstacles. I did not have a paved highway ahead of me with many exits and avenues. I had to construct my own highway and create the avenues on which I ride along. Growing up, I did not have a mentor to guide me through my education career; college was never a dream for me, now it is reality. I have pushed myself to my limits and will continue to do so in graduate school. Working as a University Ambassador for CSU Stanislaus, I enjoy providing students and parents the resources of pursuing higher education. This has inspired me to continue my education by taking the initiative in the following: applying to graduate school to become a counselor; working at Excell Center, which is a group home for boys ranging from the ages 10-17 years old; and conducting my internship at the Probation Department and seeing the lack of education that plagues many of the students. I have become interested in becoming a community organizer. I look forward to setting up programs that would derail adolescents from delinquent acts and redirect them toward becoming community leaders.
Why did you choose CSU Stanislaus?
I chose CSU Stanislaus because of its small student population. I wanted to have more interaction with the faculty, and CSU Stanislaus has given me that opportunity.
What advice would you give a prospective student?
To be organized, study, and be active on campus by joining clubs.
What has been your favorite academic or student life experience so far?
My favorite student life experience by far has to be when I was involved in the SITE (Summer Intensive Transfer Experience) program for UC Merced. I was given the opportunity to stay at UCLA for one week with expenses paid. It was there at UCLA where I decided I wanted to continue with my education.
What is your career objective?
At-risk youth counselor
What clubs, sports, and activities have you participated in?
I am a brother of Nu Alpha Kappa. I have also been involved with the Criminal Justice Club.
Who is your most influential personal and/or University mentor?
One of my most influential people is Edward James Olmos. My University mentor is Dr. James Payne because he has provided me vital information on my career goals and has encouraged me to attend grad school.
