Biography
My name is Tanya Keys, and I am the first one in my family to attend college. My father was born in Vallejo, and my mother was born in Mexico City and came to the United States when she was 13. I have two older brothers. I was born and raised in Modesto, where I still live. My goal is to run a hospital or medical group. Once I complete my bachelor’s degree, I plan on getting my Master of Business Administration here at CSU Stanislaus.
Why did you choose CSU Stanislaus?
I chose CSU Stanislaus for a few reasons, one being the growing reputation of our business program. Also, the small class sizes were very important for me. I saw it as an opportunity to have better relationships with my professors. And finally, the gorgeous campus and the area was the cherry on top.
What does ‘learning’ mean to you, as it pertains to a college environment?
College isn’t just about learning and understanding the materials professors give to you — it’s also about learning how to interact with many different types of people. Not only do you learn things about yourself, but you also learn how to handle the real world and the daily obstacles you may face.
Who is your most influential personal and/or university mentor? Why?
I would have to say Ysaura Olivo and C.J. Chaney. I am so thankful that I have had the opportunity not only to know these women, but also work with them. They have both taught me that hard work and dedication pay off in the short run, but you will also see greater things in the long run. These women are both strong and amazing women. I know I can go to them both in any situation, from needing help with a class to just listening to me rant about nothing. I only hope I can grow to become half the women they are. Thank you Ysaura and C.J. for giving me encouragement and having faith in me these past years. You will never know how much you mean to me.
What clubs, sports, and activities in which have you participated? Any fun/memorable experiences?
I have been a university ambassador since my freshman year at CSU Stanislaus. Showcasing our campus to prospective students has truly been a great experience that I would definitely recommend students take part in. To have someone say that you helped them choose CSU Stanislaus as their new home — the feeling is indescribable. I also joined Alpha Xi Delta during my sophomore year. Alpha Xi Delta is honestly the best thing that has happened to me. I was able to improve my leadership skills by gaining an important position in my first semester. I also have been able to network with other chapters across the country. My sisters are always there for me, no matter what. I love being able to walk through the quad and know so many faces. I definitely recommend students get involved on campus, no matter if it’s a campus job, going Greek or even being in a club. There is nothing to lose, but so much to gain.
What makes you tick? What do you do for fun?
I really cannot stand not being busy. I always have to keep busy, whether it’s school, two jobs, sorority or whatever, I am happy. Don’t get me wrong — I like to have my lazy days when I get a break, but I would rather be out with my friends. Movies, concerts, shopping or just catching up with old friends is the best thing to do to take a break from life.
How would you convince a prospective student that CSU Stanislaus is the best fit for their higher education needs?
CSU Stanislaus is everything you need in a university. If you are looking for resources to expand knowledge, CSU Stanislaus has them — from the tutoring and writing center, computer lab, small class sizes and great, professional staff, to having a peaceful spot by one of the several lakes to read materials. If you are looking for leadership opportunities, we have them. Joining Associated Students Inc., going Greek, joining or creating a club, or even working on campus are all great ways to get the necessary leadership skills we need to take on the job market. If you want internship opportunities, CSU Stanislaus is the school for you. Whatever you are looking for, CSU Stanislaus is the place to be.
