Counseling Application

Prerequisites for the M.S. Counseling Psychology Degree*

  1. Bachelors ddegree in Psychology, or a Bachelors degree in another discipline with completion of a course in Introductory Psychology and a minimum of 16 upper-division semester units in psychology with a grade of B- or better with course content acceptable to the Psychology Graduate Committee.
  2. Undergraduate coursework (each with a grade of B or better) in:
    • Psychological Testing
    • Research Methods
    • Abnormal Psychology
    • Counseling Theory
    • Counseling Techniques
    • Human Development
  3. A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0
  4. Satisfactory performance on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test, which includes the GRE Analytical Writing Section.

*These are suggested minimum scores, but admittance in the program is decided on a combination of these factors in addition to experience, personal statements, reference letters and interviews.

The two-step written application process

Application is a two-step process with separate application forms for each step:

  1. Complete an application to California State University, Stanislaus. CSU Mentor provides a method for applying for all CSU campuses online. You can obtain a printed version of the university graduate application by contacting the Admissions and Records office at (209) 667-3070.
  2. Complete the application the California State University, Stanislaus Psychology Department Masters Program. Our department application is available for download, you will need a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader to view or print the file. You can obtain a printed version of the Department of Psychology graduate application by contacting our office at (209) 667-3386.

Note: Eligible students can be admitted to the California State University, Stanislaus without being admitted to the Psychology Masters Program. This status is called Post-Baccalaureate and allows students to enroll and complete University courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level. This status us often used by students completing prerequisite courses for the program.
