Our lives are not determined by what happens to us but by how we react to what happens, not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events, and outcomes. It is a catalyst, a spark that creates extraordinary results.
Hope for a Brighter Tomorrow
Every day, young people "graduate" from foster care with too few resources to start life on their own. Yet, like most young people, foster youth have ambitions, goals and dreams. Given the chance, they can pursue higher education. For these youth, California State University, Stanislaus provides hope through the Promise Scholars Program. The program gives former foster youth a leg up, smoothing their way into college and providing support through students’ college journey. Promise Scholars receive special academic advising, as well as instruction and support for developing life skills, such as securing safe and affordable housing, learning how to manage money, and while in school, finding jobs that won’t interfere with their academic goals. Read more about the Promise Scholars program at mystanmag.org.
On September 9, 2012 Friends of the Promise Scholars Program will be competing for the first prize in the Community Brunch for YOUth, a competition of local charities and chefs. Join us as we cook up some fun!!! For more information, click here.
To recognize the people who are supporting former foster youth attending CSU Stanislaus, The Promise Scholars Program created "1,000 Angels," a group individuals and businesses that are donating their time, products and services, and financial resources in support of former foster youth. There are many ways to get involved, and something as simple as donating new blankets or sheets, goes a long way to helping young people meet their educational and professional goals.
The Promise Scholars Program is a component of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) and has partnered with various on campus services to provide a holistic approach to meeting the needs of foster youth in higher education. CSU Stanislaus is a proud partner in the Northern California University Foster Youth Consortium, which is dedicated to recruitment and to providing access to housing, financial aid, and academic guidance and support for eligible foster youth.
"Each of us has different backgrounds, different talents, different dreams, and different destinations, yet we all the power to make a new tomorrow."
