Wanda Bonnell serves as Program Coordinator of the Promise Scholars Program at California State University, Stanislaus. Ms. Bonnell has worked at CSU Stanislaus since 1993 and has served as the Program Coordinator of the Promise Scholars Program since its official launch in the fall of 2006.
Ms. Bonnell’s role as the Program Coordinator of the Promise Scholars Program does not end with formal program logistics. Instead she has allowed her role to extend into that of counselor, advocate and friend to Promise Scholar students. Ms. Bonnell serves the Promise Scholars enrolled in the program in meaningful ways. “This program has been a really big help,” said Promise Scholar Serena Vidaure. “Wanda’s helped me resolve some problems, and I really love being a student here.” Fellow Promise Scholar Misty Deckert echoed Vidaure’s sentiments when she said, “Financially and mentor-wise with classes and advice on units, Wanda has been very helpful.”
A 1995 graduate of CSU Stanislaus with a B.A. in Psychology, Ms. Bonnell is furthering her education by currently completing a Master’s Degree in Education with a concentration in School Counseling. In 2002 Ms. Bonnell received a Certificate of Training in Domestic violence/Child Abuse. She brings over 20 years of experience working with students who are educationally disadvantaged and has partnered with local foster youth agencies and child welfare advocates to provide college-bound students from foster care situations access to post-secondary education.
Ms. Bonnell’s contributions to the Promise Scholars Program and the CSU Stanislaus community are reflected in her numerous awards and recognitions which include: 2007 Soroptimist International Women Distinction, 2005 Outstanding Woman of Stanislaus County, and the 2002 CSU Club Advisor of the Year.
“The transition to post-secondary education can be overwhelming for foster youth,” Bonnell said. “Research clearly shows that strong support can and does make all the difference. I try to provide consistent, individualized attention to each student I work with. It’s very rewarding.”
