Meet the Peers

I have learned perseverance and have a spirit that will never give up. It took me 15 years to get my AA, but I knew if I kept taking one class at a time I would eventually reach my goals. At times I have felt like a failure, but I have a desire to help others reach their full potential so I continued my journey even though my personal life was full of challenges and obstacles. I am currently in my second year of the MSW program and am looking forward to working with peers to increase wellness.

I am the first generation of my family to attend college. I remember my first year as an undergraduate often feeling anxious and fearful of not knowing if I would make it and finish my degree. Adjusting to a new environment and working through the academic challenges was overwhelming at times. Now as a MSW student it is my desire to help students in campus who encounter any challenges in their lives. I hope that together we can create a safe environment where you can heal, grow and reach wellness.

I have faced and overcome many obstacles in my life to get to where I am today. Due to these obstacles I have a desire to make a difference in the lives of others. My mother was born and raised in Mexico, whereas my father was born in Texas, but raised in Mexico. Since my parents were raised in Mexico they were not given the same educational opportunities as in the United States. I am the first to receive my high school diploma, bachelors and eventually my master’s degree in my family.

Going to college may be one of the greatest challenges and hardest adjustments you will ever go through. In my experience, having the right people in your corner during times of adversity and stress can make all the difference. Thanks to some of the wonderful people that have helped me along my journey to get to where I am, I now have a tremendous desire to do the same for others.

I am a MSW student at CSU Stanislaus. I am the first person in my immediate family to attend and graduate at a 4-year college and also pursuing a master's degree. Moving to Stanislaus county has been an adventure since moving from the Bay Area and I've met many great people. My goal for the Peer Project is to communicate with students and help them in any way that I can.

I am an MSW graduate student at Stan State.  I have experienced working with at risk youths, children dealing with autism, and parents with newborn children.  In my spare time, I am deeply involved with the local music scene.  I do sound for the Off the Air shows, and temporarily ran an open mic in Modesto.  My life experiences have led me to a pursuit of learning and sharing wellness and art with others.

I am a first generation Muslim college student that is passionate about helping others and contributing to society by making a difference. I have overcome many challenges as a first generation college student but it has made me a stronger and independent person. I am grateful for all the great opportunities and the people that made a difference in my life because it has developed me into the person I am today. I hope to utilize all the leadership skills that I have learned to help students find guidance and turn challenges in their lives into success.
