What is Liberal Studies?

The Liberal Studies major is a pre-professional program leading to Multiple Subject or Special Education credential programs.  Our mission is to insure that students graduate with a strong subject matter background and necessary experience and content to prepare them for a teaching career in elementary education.  Our major, approved by The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing , has several distinctive features:
  • Field experience in elementary classrooms in LIBS 1000, LIBS 2000, and LIBS 3000.
  • Courses developed by discipline faculty from across campus designed exclusively for Liberal Studies majors.
  • Personal portfolio development over the years in the program.
  • Students have flexible options in both timing and in coursework alternatives. They choose their own pace, four years or more, in completing the program.
  • Seamless transfer from our four feeder community colleges: Columbia College, Merced College, Modesto Junior College and San Joaquin Delta College.  More than sixty units of our LIBS major are articulated with our four local feeders.
  • Opportunities for upper division students to serve as Deans' Team leaders and Peer Advisors
  • Seamless transition to CSU Stanislaus Multiple Subject Credential Program. Majors may begin credential coursework before completing the major.
