Highway stretch to be named after CSU Stanislaus graduate

A stretch of Highway 120 near Yosemite National Park will be named in honor of former CSU Stanislaus women’s basketball standout and graduate Eva Schicke.

A 2002 Criminal Justice Degree graduate of CSU Stanislaus, Schicke was killed in 2004 when she was overcome by wind-whipped flames while battling a wildfire near Groveland. A California State Assembly bill introduced by Assemblyman Tom Berryhilll approved the naming of the highway stretch in her honor, and Governor Schwarzenegger signed it into law this month. Firefighters plan to raise the money for a highway sign designating the Eva Schicke stretch of roadway near Groveland.

A memorial to Schicke, CalFire’s first female firefighter to die in the line of duty, was placed at the Rim of the World overlook vista point on the Tuolumne River in April.
