Outstanding CIS Student for 2003-2004
Congratulations to Megan Anderson who has been selected by the CIS faculty as the Outstanding CIS Student for academic year 2003-2004.

This distinction is bestowed each year upon that student who, in the estimation of the faculty, exemplifies the best and brightest of our undergraduates in the CIS program.  The recipient must have an exemplary academic record and have demonstrated exceptional potential in our discipline.  This was a difficult decision for the CIS faculty as we have several truly outstanding students in the program again this year.

Hearty congratulations also go to Nikolay Gueorguiev who was selected as one of the two standard bearers for the entire College of Business Administration at the commencement this year.

Gallo Lab Upgrade
Thanks to the E & J Gallo Winery for a generous program support grant of $100,000 plus numerous workstations and notebook computers, the CIS Gallo Lab P106 will be completely overhauled during the summer of 2003.  All servers and all workstations will be upgraded or replaced.  The ikaros2 Terminal Server will be augmented with a new dual 3 Ghz Xeon server.  Thanks to CIS student Mark Mahacek who wrote the load balancing software, students will be able to link to one URL and be automatically directed to an available terminal server - pretty cool stuff!  The Hermes student file server will be upgraded with additional storage; ikaros, our network Primary Domain Controller (it validates your account when you log in) will be replaced with a 3 Ghz server - significantly speeding up the log-in process.  And the CIS Web server will be replaced with a 3 Ghz server with super-fast hard drives to better support streaming media.

Seventeen Dell workstations will be replaced with 3 Ghz PCs.  The remaining workstations will eventually have TWO PCs with a KVM switch to allow sharing the monitor, keyboard and mouse/trackball.  This will better accommodate the specialized needs of several CIS courses such as 4100 and 4800 while simultaneously making more general purpose workstations available for scheduled upper division CIS lab classes..  All workstations in the lab will have a high quality 17" NEC LCD monitor and both a trackball and scroll mouse.   The system unit cabinets will be mounted below the table giving more workspace and a clearer view of the instructor console.   One of the workstations will be equipped for serious video capturing and editing.

Thanks to your student lab fees we are also adding a newer and faster laser printer, a new scanner, and trackball pointing devices at every workstation.

In order to have the lab ready for Fall classes, the CIS Gallo Lab P106 will be closed for the summer 2003.  We will do our best to keep the ikaros2 Terminal Server up and running to allow remote access to the CIS LAN.

Again, our thanks to the E & J Gallo Winery for their continuing support of the CIS program.

Outstanding students for 2002-2003

Congratulations to John Choi who has been selected by the CIS faculty as the Outstanding CIS Student for academic year 2002-2003.

This distinction is bestowed each year upon that student who, in the estimation of the faculty, exemplifies the best and brightest of our undergraduates in the CIS program.  The recipient must have an exemplary academic record and have demonstrated exceptional potential in our discipline.  We had a large group of worthy students this year which made the competition keen and the selection difficult.

CIS Student Survey
As part of an on-going continuous improvement process,  the CIS Department is conducting a survey of CIS Majors and CIS Minors to determine perceived quality of the program.  If you have not participated in the survey, which is being distributed in all CIS classes, please contact any CIS instructor or stop by the CIS Department office and complete one.  There are only a few simple questions and it only takes a minute or two to complete, but your input is extremely valuable in helping us identify our strengths and weaknesses and will ultimately result in improvement to the CIS program.
