Networks: Panel Calls |
 |
 |
|
| We are please to publish calls for the following themed panels: |
Please note the contact information and deadlines below.
Is Heart of Darkness a Fable for Our Times?: This panel seeks
papers from a range of disciplines, probing the relevance of Conrad's novella to current events such as, but not limited to, the war in
Iraq. Does the novel's treatment of imperialism have anything to say about neoconservative idealism? Does Chinua Achebe's critique of
Conrad's depictions of Africans have anything to say about today's humanitarian idealism, and the ways that Iraqis, Darfurians, etc., are
depicted in the national media? Please send abstracts of 250 words plus a CV to Jesse Wolfe at jlwolfe1970@gmail.com by Dec 15, 2007
Technological Resistance: Recently the rhetoric of empires and resistance has been used to describe many aspects of technology, from the business practices of companies such as Microsoft and Google, to the actions of open-source hacktivists, to the themes of cyberpunk novelists. We hope to bring these different uses into contact and to achieve a fuller understanding of how technologies can act as, for, and against empires. Papers dealing with specific technologies, communities, authors, companies are welcome; other topics will considered as well, and if warranted, a second panel may be added. Please send abstracts of up to 250 words and a c.v. to Kim De Vries by Dec 15, 2007.
We also welcome panel proposals which should a title, and include abstracts for all papers; these maybe emailed directly to Kim De Vries. If you wish to solicit proposals for a panel through our website, please contact Kim at the email address given on the left; we are happy to add sub-calls to our pages. We also welcome submission of creative work; for information on submitting sample images, video, etc, again please contact Kim De Vries.
