 Dear Colleague:

Several years ago I became frustrated by the sameness of the texts offered for Music
Appreciation. They had too much material, they were too expensive, and the approach
seemed to focus on history more than appreciation. Only a small minority of my students
could deal with the examples in musical notation and the rest were frustrated and
put-off. How can publishers presume to send those lavish descriptive brochures without
ever mentioning the price of the text?

 What I needed was:
 1. A more basic, more concise text; one that could be completed comfortably in a
 semester.
 2. A text written with real understanding of the non-musician's point of view.
 3. A focus on music that is actually available in today's concert halls.
 4. Inclusion of practical subjects like concert-going, stereo equiptment, and period
 instruments.
 5. A text that was reasonable and affordable.

Out of these concerns, has come my text, The Revelation of Music, which many
of you have welcomed kindly. The Revised and Enlarged Edition incorporates improvements
and suggestions from those who have used the original edition. Each copy now comes
shrink-wrapped with a 70 minute CD, digitally indexed to listening guides. The book
and CD together are $27.95 (still about half the price of the average current text).

Enclosed is your complimentary examination copy, and for those of you who might be
interested in something different, a copy of my other book, The Musical Ascent
of Herman Being, also available in a new updated edition, priced at $11.95.
friendship, food, the opposite sex, and of course great music. Presented are fascinating
insights into the essential nature of music, inspiration, and at the same time, a
practical guide for dealing with music in the real world. Here, for the first time,
is an approach that establishes a theory and an actual process for learning to love
 music.

Ultimately, Herman and the reader, are offered the "secret" of finding
great music as a life enriching experience; a revelation of such power and elegance,
it leaves the reader wondering how it could have gone undiscovered for so long.
