These classes will either be a prerequisite for participants without a job history before they enter Job Club or a “filler” for those who have one or more weeks without a planned activity before they enter school, a job training program, or actual employment. 59: <p><i><span class="Hdr-Topic-Sml1">Three-Week Program<br> 60: </span></i><b><i>Work Wellness: The Basics</i> – new three-week curriculum.</b> This approved program is for participants with one or more serious obstacles/barriers to preparation for entering the work world or being successful once they obtain a job. Examples of participants who might qualify for the extended curriculum are those in recovery from drugs and alcohol, those with serious health problems (mental, emotional or physical), those with self esteem so low it interferes with a positive presentation of self, those in abusive relationships, and those with minimal life skills.</p> 61: <p>CalWORKs and contract agency case managers refer participants to Work Wellness: The Basics, a holistically based wellness education program. Participants are served breakfast and lunch each day and experience a full day of classes from Monday AM through Friday PM. During the one-week program fifteen instructors, each an expert in their field, teach the following:</p> 62: <ul> 63: <li><b>Success is a choice</b> covers keys to success, the power of positive self-image, both inner and outer image.<li><b>Dress for Success</b> includes a slide show, image presentation, personal appearance and grooming techniques, and makeovers.<li><b>Exercise</b> classes include beginning weight training, easy aerobics, circuit training, and stretching.<li><b>True Colors</b> is a self-assessment tool that helps identify individual strengths and qualities in a fun and light-hearted way. It encourages one to recognize, understand, and appreciate the differences in others and also increases individual self-confidence, respect, dignity, esteem, worthiness and character.<li><b>Effects of Smoking</b> covers topics such as physiological changes and chronic diseases that result from smoking, effects of secondhand smoke on non-smokers, and the effects on unborn babies.<li><b>Tai Chi</b> involves basic breathing techniques, simple acupressure and massage methods and very gentle, non-strenuous Tai Chi movements which help to reduce stress, manage pain, promote relaxation, improve concentration, increase energy, heal the body and quiet the mind.<li><b>Nutrition</b> covers Eating for Energy & Wellness, Check it Out: The Label & You, Goodbye Bacteria—Hello Safe Foods, and Non-Diet Weight Management.<li><b>Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections and Pregnancy</b> covers sexually transmitted infections caused by parasites, bacteria, and viruses. Discussion includes prevention, symptoms, and treatment. Techniques to prevent pregnancy such as barriers, spermicides and hormones, are also included. 64: <li><b>Coping with Stress</b> includes what stress does to one’s body and mind, recognizing one’s own stress signals and those of others, and how to deal with these signals so that participants can feel that they have more power over their lives. 65: <li><b>Conflict Resolution</b> focuses on effective communication, what you see versus what you get, blocks to listening, techniques for active listening and role-playing activities. 66: <li><b>Parenting</b> covers stresses of parenting and clarifies differences between discipline and punishment. 67: <li><b>Healthy Relationships</b> includes examples of domestic violence, the cycle of violence, obstacles to leaving a domestic violence relationship, warning signs, safety plan, effects on children, and myths versus facts about domestic violence.<br> 68: Each week ends with a review and evaluation of the entire curriculum and a completion ceremony. Participants receive individualized affirmations, certificates of participation or completion, and useful and inspirational gifts. 69: </ul> 70: <p>In the Three-Week program, participants have the same classes as the One-Week program. The topics above are expanded on and they have four additional topics in their curriculum.</p> 71: <p>Those additional topics are:</p> 72: <ul> 73: <li><b>Anger Management</b> covers definition, causes, facts, and perceptions about anger.
